Obligatory comment about how a fictional simpleton is more important than any woman.
Maybe I'm a cynic, but I am impressed that Alan Turing made the list.
Turing is a special case because there was never any doubt about how important his contribution was, but the full extent of it was largely kept secret. Once the circumstances and extent of his work became known, he quickly got the recognition. Far too late for him of course.
For that matter, why not Doctor John Snow instead of a fictional character?
They think Banksy is unknown? He's one of the most famous people in the country isn't he?
I was also surprised to see Rick Allen, Def Leppard's one-armed drummer. Given that the most famous thing about Def Leppard is the fact their drummer has only one arm.
If you'd said "Dr James Barry" I'd have given you more details than you care to know - in fact, when I saw JM Barrie on the first list my first thought was "Is that the author or the doctor?" but I never knew her birth name.
Who? What? Are these famous poms?
